* A teacher named John Scopes in East Tennessee taught his class evolution despite the laws against it in Tennessee (Butler act).

* On July 21 1925 he was taken to court on charges of breaking the butler act.

* Eventually the court ruled John Scopes guilty and fined $100 but but the verdict was overturned on a technicality.
