Men over 30 are more prevalent to gout. Usually does not occur with women until after menopause. Genetics may increase risk to those that have an enzyme defect that leads to higher uric acid levels. Being overweight and having an unhealthy diet can greatly impact the risk of gout. Drinking alcohol, soda, and orange juice also contributes.
