Gustave Courbet was a 19th-century painter and sculpter from Ornans, France. He grew up in a wealthy agricultural household with his patents and sisters. At a young age, he used his sisters as models to both his drawings and paintings.

He left his family and moved to Paris to pursue a career. Many of his early paintings were self portraits such as Self Portrait with a Black Dog. It is said some of his early work was inspired by poet Victor Hugo.

Courbet really sparked the Realist movement in France when he stated that artists should stop making historical paintings and simply paint what they see with their own eyes. At the time, historical paintings were the most popular, so some people did not agree with his views.
