The rhythms of the monsoons and irrigation kept the land well watered and allowed for the agricultural potential to be reached.

Dams, reservoirs, canals, wells, and tunnels were used for irrigation. Monumental reservoirs captured the rains of the spring and summer months and held them until the dry season, when canals carried them to fields.

Increased agricultural productivity allowed India's population to grow throughout the postclassical era.
