IMATH...a quicker pathway to your college level math
LMH 10.4.16
So what is IMATH?
The "i" in IMATH stands for "integrated". IMATH classes are integrated because they combine a developmental-level Math class (course numbers less than 100) with a college-level Math class.
What is the advantage of taking an IMATH class?
By combining a developmental math class with a college math class, it permits students to complete their math curriculum more quickly (and save money in the process!).
Students who have majors in the Liberal Arts and Humanities (LAH) are encouraged to consider IMATH 98
Traditional pathway for Mathematics
IMATH pathway for LAH
The advantage of the IMATH pathway is that one or more courses can be bypassed for students who do not need math higher than Math& 107.
IMATH 99 is a recommended option for students majoring in Science, Engineering or Math (SEM)
Traditional pathway for Mathematics
IMATH pathway for SEM
The advantage of the IMATH pathway is that students can advance more quickly to higher level Math classes needed for many SEM majors.
IMATH looks like a great option - what else do I need to know before I sign up?
IMATH courses are worth 8 credits (3 hours of developmental math + 5 hours of college math). You need to pass BOTH the developmental math and the college math components to pass the course. If you are well prepared and motivated, IMATH can save you time and money. If you are not prepared to study hard, there are a lot of credits at risk.
If I pass my IMATH class, can I take higher level math classes at Olympic College?
If a student completes BOTH parts of IMATH for SEM (Math 099I + Math& 141) with a grade of 2.5 or better, that student can take any Math class that has a Math 099 prerequisite. IMATH for LAH (Math 098I + Math& 107) is NOT designed to meet the needs of students who desire more advanced Math classes. Therefore, students wishing to take higher level math classes that have Math 099 (Intermediate Algebra) as a prerequisite would be better served following the traditional math pathway.
Does IMATH transfer to a 4 year university?
Completed IMATH classes appear on transcripts as two courses: A college math (either Math& 107 or Math&141) and a developmental math (either Math 098I or Math 099I). In general, college math classes will transfer to most baccalaureate institutions. Developmental math classes, whether they are IMATH or the traditional sequence of developmental math probably will NOT transfer.
I am still not sure if IMATH is the right choice for me. What should I do?
1. Contact a Math instructor. They can answer IMATH questions better than anyone else. Karen Hulsebosch ([email protected]) is the lead instructor for IMATH classes. 2. Talk to your faculty advisor. Your advisor can help you with those tough decisions. 3. If you are transferring to a 4 year college or university, make sure you understand transfer requirements.
4. Review the Math curriculum sequences for your program of study (tap on the arrow on the diagram)
