Botulism is caused by

Food born - improper canning or preservation.
Wound born - wounded area becomes contaminated.
(Rare) Infant born - infant consumes; becomes immune.
Botulism bacteria create a protein, called botulin, which invades excitatory nerve cells where they meet with muscle fibers and blocks the junction so that no signals can get through. Paralysis is formed.
