Gothic Literature- a literary genre that began in England in the late 1700's that have bleak or remote settings, macabre or violent incidents, and or physical torment, supernatural or otherworldly elements and strong language full of dangerous meanings.
Setting- is the time and place of the action.
Single Effect- Poe's theory about what constituted a good short story, a good short story achieved its unity by achieving single emotional effect on the reader.
