The Indians

Powhattan's Confederacy
Few dozen small tribes
Food supplies often raided by settlers

First Anglo-Powhatan War:
English commanded by Lord De La Warr
Introduced "Irish tactics"
Raided villages, burned houses, confiscated provisions and burned corn fields.
Ended in 1614 with the marriage of John Rolfe to Pocohantas
Plagued by disease the Indians will attack in 1622 killing 347 settlers including John Rolfe.

Second Anglo Powhatan War
peace treaty of 1646 banished the Indians from their ancestral lands and started the reservation system

Noteworthy:
Disease: smallpox & measles
Disuse: served no economic function unlike the Spanish who put them to work mining silver and gold
Disfunction: no unity, completely disposable
Catawba Nation formed from several fragmented trade
Firearms will escalate the circle of violence
Algonquins in the Great Lake will be a lasting tribe and major trade power
