Rural life in Texas
Between 1846 and 1860 nearly all Texas lived on farms or ranches.
Many texans farmed or raised cattle themselves rather then working for someone else, since land was so inexpensive
Food crops included corn, wheat, oats, and sweet potatoes
Cotton was the primary source for cash
Sugar cane was popular as well
Farmers mostly raised milk cows, hogs, and chicken for food
