The lightbulb was invented in1879. Before Thomas Edison invented the light bulb people would use candles, firelight, torches, etc. whatever they could for light. When he invented the light bulb it was a pretty big impact not just on them but on life today too, without it we wouldn't have become as advanced in electricity as we are now.
