Education Reform

Starting in the 1830s Americans who payed taxes demanded a public school system. One problem is that many kids were enrolled in private schools, and would not leave. There was also opposition from Germans who feared a loss of culture in switching to a public school model. Public schools started to take shape and within a couple of years, elementary schools in PA had 42% of children. Later by the 1850s, every state had some publicly funded schools.
