Literacy and Comprehension Tests
Literacy and Comprehension Tests were tests that had to be taken before you could vote in much of the South. These tests were primarily put in place to keep African Americans from voting. However these tests also banned illiterate white Americans. Grandfather Clauses were established to skirt around this.
