Jim Crow laws dominated everyday southern life by 1900. They caused segregation in schools, parks, public buildings, hospitals, transportation systems, bathrooms and even water fountains.

"Separate-but-equal"

In the Supreme Court case plessy v. Ferguson the Supreme Court ruled it constitutional to segregate whites and blacks as long as the conditions in both facilities were equivalent
