Even though certain theories on modernization assume increasing
similarities in industrial societies (Inglehart, 1977), Japan and Germany are still today characterized by quite different cultural values. For example, definite changes towards postmaterialist values cannot be detected in Japanese society today (Trommsdorff, 1983).
