Although the Japanese were out numbered 3 to 1 they were still able to hold on to the Philippines and carry out very bad things such as the Bataan death march. In the eyes of Japan they did win, but with a major setback for the military because it took a lot longer than expected for them to fight the allied forces and filipinos.
Another thing that the japanese did were taking the POWs and putting them on "Hell Ships". They were basically very poor living conditions for the allied prisoners and they weren't marked POWs so sometimes they were attacked by the allies.
