In what ways did economic conditions and developments in the arts and entertainment help create the reputation of the 1920's as the Roaring Twenties?
The 1920’s has been described as the “Golden Age of Sports” and boxing needed a superstar, which Dempsey clearly became, to go along with Babe Ruth in baseball, Bill Tilden in tennis and Walter Hagen in golf. Dempsey and boxing became the perfect match. With these superstars more like "American heroes" helped create developments in the entertainment.
Affluence made possible the growth of a professional sports industry. People had money to buy tickets for an ancient entertainment: spectating, as at Rome's Colusseum. Boxing drew the biggest crowds. World War I had given boxing a boost with its development of "the manly arts." Local laws against boxing were rescinded.
