Theme: Love and Wanting to be Loved
In the final chapters of Jane Eyre, Jane struggles with herself over wanting to be free and loving Rochester. She yearns for love at last but she is worried that once she marries Rochester, her freedom would be taken away. Independence is important to Jane and we see her in the final chapters before returning to Rochester weighing her options. It is not until St. John's final proposal and hearing Rochester's voice calling her name that she finally realizes that to be married isn't taking away your independence or freedom; you simply share your freedom with the one you love. That is what ends her battle against herself and makes her go to Thornfield Hall in the search of Rochester
