Why do the plates separate?

The plates separate cause of currents of semi-molten (melted) rock beneath the earths crust. These currents are called convection currents. The plates float on the molten rock beneath the surface, when the currents move the plates separate and magma emerges from beneath the earths crust. It then starts to harden and becomes part of a mountain.
