Rural life in Texas
In 1846-1860 farms grew from 12,000 from nearly all texans being farmers or ranchers, because of how cheap land was. Corn was one of many food crops that were really popular to grow, but corn was a major part in Texans diet. Some Farmers did not make good money. If the farmers didn't have cotton (cash crop) would lead to bankruptcy. In addition, farmers started raising sheep for wool. The importance of ranching has existed since the period of Spanish rule, but the importance has gone up in the 1850s.
