In 1800 Alessandro Volta from Italy built the voltaic pile and discovered the first practical method of generating electricity. He also made discoveries in electrostatics, meteorology and pneumatics but his most famous invention is the first battery. It was invented and first used in Italy.

The impact it has on life now is that without this invention we wouldn't have portable electronic devices, because without batteries electronics wouldn't be able to function, so electronic devices wouldn't even exist hypothetically without voltas invention. Also modern technology might have taken a completely different way and not been so advanced. The benefits it provides us is that we can use so many helpful devices and other electronics items thanks to a battery without it our world would be so different.
