SUMMARY

The gravitational pull between two nearby galaxies results in a pair of galaxies orbiting each other. After a long time gravitational interactions can cause the two galaxies to get closer until they eventually merge into a single galaxy. Galaxies so close to each other will strip away each other's stars, gas and dust. They slowly morph into each other and become a new irregular galaxy.
