Although Lamar had set aside land for schools, Texas had not improved much. No public school system was available when Texas became a state, and most Anglo-Americans attended private schools.
Most schools were one room log houses, so the governor, Elisha M. Pease, set aside 2 million dollars for a school fund in 1876. More colleges and universities were added as well. Today that money set aside is worth 20 million dollars.
