She had courage to get to the police badge back from her boyfriend and sacrificing their relationship.
Her mom also had courage by telling her what happened to her when she was younger.

This relates to our mission during Lent. We are called to give alms, pray, fast and abstain, to move forward on our lenten journey.

Like in Joan, we need to do things that seem hard for what is best for us.
