In 1917 a poet Jean Cocteau who worked with Sergel Diaghilev asked Picasso to make sketches and decoration for a ballet that was coming up in the future.

He fell in love with one of the dancers of the ballet. Olga Khohlova became his first wife in 1918 and they had their son Paul in 1921.
