IRON SHIPS
New York provided the Union with a new kind of weapon. In 1862, the Continental Iron Works in Brooklyn built an iron-covered ship. A steam engine powered this ship.It was called the Monitor. On March 8, the Monitor fought a similar Confederate "ironclad" called the Merrimac in Chesapeake Bay.
