College Years

- In 1824 Poe served as the lieutenant of the Richmond youth honor guard.

- He enrolled in the University of Virginia in February 1826, where he studied languages.

- It had strict rules against gambling, horses, guns, tobacco and alcohol, but these rules were usually just ignored.

- He lost contact with John Allan, because of gambling debt.

- Poe claimed that John Allan didn't send him enough money for all the things he needed.

- Allan ended up sending him more money and clothes, but his debts still increased.

- After a year in the university he dropped out.
