Sam Houston Vs Mirabeau B Lamar

SAM HOUSTON
- Wanted to have annexation because he thought Texas would be better off in America.

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR
-He opposed annexation, he wanted Texas to remain independent he felt that Texas would be better off as their own country.

SAM HOUSTON
-Sam Houston was raised by the Indian and has the nickname "The Raven" by the Cherokees. He loved the Indians and tried to make a peace treaty.

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR
-Lamar hated the Indians and ordered the Cherokees to leave in 1839. He raised the debt $2.5 million trying to get rid of the Indians.

-of course wanted the capital to be in Houston and in his 2nd term was established in Houston.

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR
-wanted the capital to be in Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin. It was along the Colorado river but ended up calling it Austin.

-his debt was low because he wanted to lower debt and only use the money needed. His debt was $2 million.

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR
-He believed that he should use a lot of money and used a lot of money trying to remove the Indians and also spent it on more troops.

-He sent 600 solders home on leave and never called them back on duty. He didn't want to have that many solders because it cost to much and he didn't think they needed them.

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR
-Lamar wanted more troops and and sent troops to Mexico. He sent 270 men to Santa fe to try to convince them that they were Texan citizens.

-Wants to keep good relation with Mexico and try to not start another war with them.(eventually has to deal with them which leads to the black bean incident)

MIRABEAU B. LAMAR
-Hated Mexico intimidated them by Texans. Wasn't smart and wanted Texas to be larger and more independent but that created conflict with Mexico.
