When Galileo mentioned his book during the trial he didn't back up his ideas. Galileo said, "In regard to my writing of the published DIALOGUE, I did not do so because I held the Capernicorn doctrine to be true." Galileo tells the church that he doesn't believe in the things he wrote so that he wouldn't be killed.
Galileo's Testimony
Galileo's attitude towards the church's questions was very strong. In the beginning of the trial Galileo told the church that he had nothing tho say. Once the church started asking questions Galileo had a lot to say about his statement.
I think that Galileo did the right thing when he told the church that he didn't believe that the Sun was the center of the universe and that the planets moved in a oval around the sun. If Galileo said that he did believe in what his book said he would have been killed.
