Overcoming hardship- Cloyd is sent to a farm in Colorado with a man named Walter. Cloyd wasn't looking forward to living with a stranger so he runs to the mountains and finds a turquoise rock shaped as a bear. he was told , bears were a symbol of good luck so he kept it. while he was working for Walter a few men from Texas came to hunt on Walter's property, but they were hunting bears. Cloyd was very upset and chopped down some of Walter's peach trees because they meant to Cloyd. cloyed was driven home...he looked at his bear stone and knew what he need to do; he had to back to Walter's. he used the turquoise bear to overcome his hardship. he could get through anything with the bear all because of the meaning behind it.
