•General Nathaniel Green needed to get a message to General Thomas Sumter for him to join with Green to attack together

•No one willing to carry note; Emily offered

•Left on horseback and said she was going to visit relative

•She was captured and questioned by British

•Knowing she would be tried as a spy, she ripped up the message and ate it so there was no evidence

•British let her go

•She made it to General Sumter and delivered the message orally
