Socioeconomic Status

Socioeconomic status (abbreviated as SES) is a person's social standing. SES is like a social hierarchy. The wealthy at the top, the middle class in the middle, and the poor at the bottom. SES is usually determined by your education, income, and occupation. Your SES determines what part of the societal hierarchy you are a part of.

What does this have to do with poverty in minorities?

According to James House and David Williams, authors of the "Understanding and Reducing Socioeconomic and Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health,"race and ethnicity often determine a person's SES. In America and many places throughout the world communities are segregated by race and ethnicity. One example of this is Chicago.
