In the battle Japan lost more than 77,000 soldiers
7,400 in which were taken prisoner.
Japan lost lieutenant-general Ushijma due to suicide. Most people believed he did this around May 21st when he realized they lost the battle. This was also the day that he tried to pull his men back from the Shuri line but the government said no causing many deaths. Because of this, the US won.
