Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah

- born August 12, 1844 in Dongola, Sudan

- June 29, 1881 proclaimed himself the "Mahdi" or the messianic redeemer of the Islamic faith

- his movement was called the Mahdiyya and was led in retaliation against the oppressive policies of the Turco-Egyptian rulers of Sudan
