~ Uncle Tom's Cabin

In her writings, Harriet Beecher Stowe is trying to show readers, even though she is white, she still sympathizes with the hardships the slaves face. She writes in a optimistic tone to portray her hope for the slaves to become free.

"Children, who made your skin white?

Was it not God?

Who made mine black?

Was it not the same God?

Am I to blame, therefore,

because my skin is black?

~ Lecture at Battle Creek
