A response to the cultural events transpiring during the events of industrialization. Rejected the use of scientific and technological advancements.

Individualism: the spirit of the individual has a set of laws unto which they set upon themselves. It is important that the individual fought for their noble cause rather than to win.

Gothic themes : the use of dark elements like the supernatural, mystery, horror and death.

Viewed as natural and under-appreciated.
