Mary's education

Mary attended Mayesville's one-room black school house.

Mary also attended Trinity Missions School.

She was the only one in her family to attend a school. So everyday she'd come home from school and teach her family what she learned.

Mary walked five miles each day to get to school.

Her teacher Emma Jane Wilson became a significant mentor in her life.

She helped Mary attend the same school she went to on a scholarship

Mary attended Dwight L.Moody's Institute for Home and Foreign Missions in Chicago ,hoping to become a missionary in Africa.

They told her that black missionaries were not needed, she planned to teach.
