Charles Deering

As a connoisseur and patron of the arts, Charles Deering (older half-brother of James) assembled an extensive collection of art by old masters as well as contemporary artists. He and James spent time in Miami together, and James often invited his brother’s advice during the design of Vizcaya.

Charles built a home on the Miami River, but eventually moved to Cutler, south of Miami. Today the Deering Estate at Cutler is a public environmental and archaeological preserve along Biscayne Bay, also owned by Miami-Dade County.

7/31/1852 - 2/5/1927
