Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

She is the youngest and only girl in her family, having two older brothers.

Kelly earned her bachelors degree from the University of Richmond.

She then went on to earn her masters degree in Literature at San Francisco State University.

In 2004 Kelly was diagnosed with Breast Cancer after finding a lump on her breasts. Her father also had cancer which prompted her to write a memoir called The Middle Place.

She became a New York Times bestselling author after releasing the memoir.
