Deep-sea anglerfishes are a wonderful example of bioluminescent light used for the purpose of attracting prey. Female anglerfish are well known for their lures, properly referred to as the escal photophore. It is assumed within the scientific community that the light within the escal light gland is produced by symbiotic bacteria within the Anglerfish’s escal light glands.
The anglerfish lure is equally important in helping female anglerfish attract one or more mates. The male anglerfish must find a mate (by means of her enticing light) and latch on to her in order to survive.
