Linda and Doon pick out jobs and then they switched their jobs so that Lina got messenger instead of pipeworks and Doon got pipeworks. Lina's grandmother was searching for a box with the instructions to get out of Ember but poppy found it first and chewed up the instructions then Lina stopped her and got the instructions. Line's grandmother had a fever then died and Linda is very sad, Linda also asks people to help but they just think the instructions arn't important but Lina still thinks they are important so then she asks doon and he understands a little bit about it and doon finds a tunnel it doesn't actually lead out of ember but the mayor is hiding and getting lots of food and care and stuff but then they work out more of the instructions and find the rock marked with E and then figure out how to escape. The next day doon thinks that the guards are trying to capture them so they hide in their old schoolroom. They decide to send a message to Clary then go before them but when Lina is delivering the letter she is captured but then she escapes and finds doon and they both escape out of ember with poppy and then they remember that they didn't give the message to Clary so they find a hole which looks down on the city of ember and they tie the letter to a stone and let it drop down (right next to Ms. Murdo who finds it and opens it) ...what will happen next
