D-Day Overview
In 1944, the Allies began to plan an attack which they hoped would bring them victory in the European theater of World War II. The goal was to open up a second front in France at Normandy. This amphibious invasion would combine the use of air forces (paratroopers), naval and ground troops. This plan involved deceiving the Germans, using methods such as the Ghost Army. Operation Overlord began the morning of June 6, 1944. While the attack did not initially appear to be going well, more troops landed and the Allies were eventually successful.
