Events and trends of the late 1960’s and 1970’s significantly challenged Americans’ confidence in the political, economic, and international strength of the nation. Johnson and Nixon’s lack of credibility with the public, Carter’s foreign policy failures, and persistent inflation and stagnation created an atmosphere of suspicion towards the government, and foreign involvement with communist nations and the Middle East only furthered the lack of faith in American power.
