As a professional photographer

Moved to New York in 1948 where he met photographers Robert Capa, Edward Steichen and Roy Stryker.

Invited by Robert Capa to join Magnum Photography Cooperative in 1953.

Has served as President of Magnum for 3 terms since joining.

Has photographed many famous people, including JFK, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe & Che Guevara (among others)

Began a film career in 1970. One of his films is called The Glass Makers of Herat (1977)
