There are three major periods of different practices of Penance in the church:

1. Early Christian Penance: from apostolic times to the seventh century

2. Tariff Penance: from the seventh century to the twelfth century

3. Individual Confessions: from the twelfth century onwards

The sacrament as we know it was created in 1551 during the Council of Trent.
