Conclusions

Although ideas of the epic theatre existed already before Brecht he invented a new form of theatre. The major achievement of Brecht was to combine old ideas in a new way. His essays about drama theory and in his plays aim to educate the spectator with theatre. Art becomes a medium to make people more critical. Whereas in National-socialism politics "was becoming theatre" (Susan Sontag) to make people obediant Brecht was using theatre for the exact opposite.
