Arts and Culture
Arts and culture enhance students’ capacities for critical and creative thinking in a variety of modes and enrich the experiences of the entire community. We will improve the coherence of our utilization of the wealth of cultural resources available on campus and in the city by pursuing initiatives in these categories.

Undergraduate and graduate curricular initiatives:
Freshmen seminars like [need examples] generate excitement about the arts and culture early in students’ Penn careers. We will continue to offer seminars like these and will also explore the creation of undergraduate and graduate certificates in the public humanities.

Artists in residence
Instituted in the 1980s, the Center for Africana Studies’ Artist-in-Residence program has brought to campus some of the leading artists and intellectuals of our time. Scholars and artists reside on campus, teaching classes and presenting lectures and workshops. Artists and scholars who have participated in this residency include noted composer and jazz trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe.
