Hans is who liesel moves in with and he takes the place as her "papa". He has a painting business. He served in WWI and Erik vandenburg saved his life. He doesn't really want to join the nazi party. Walter brings max (Erik's son) and hides him at Hans house because he is a Jew. Hans teaches liesel how to read.
