Continue to make faces on the totem poll from the bottom up. If your clay starts to get harder to manipulate, put your clay in some water and squish it. This is called mucking.

Once you have your faces done, add wings to the bird that is supposed to be on top. Make sure that there is texture in the wings. Also, as you're getting close to finishing, make sure that the rest of the front of the totem poll is smoothed out.
