Heterotrophy in the carbon cycle. Where does it fit in?

When an animal or other living organism takes in oxygen from food nutrients in plants they respirate releasing carbon dioxide back into the air. This also happens when an an organisms dies and starts to decompose, more carbon dioxide is released.
