How did crime and punishment impact life in medieval times?

Due to the violent and cruel nature in medieval times, legislators were influenced to increase torture and punishment.

People lived in constant fear.

There were a lot less criminals in medieval times due to the fear of punishment.

Medieval torture was so harsh that it is now banned in most countries (but is still practiced in some such as North Korea, Iran, Iraq,Syria, and Uganda).

The church had a big influence in medieval life and was therefore among those who punished and tortured people.

Those in lower classes were given harsher punishments than those in higher classes, which was upsetting to them.
